Why Your Baby Is Waking Every Hour (And How to Gently Improve It)

If your baby is waking every hour, you’re likely exhausted, frustrated, and wondering what you’re doing wrong. Please trust, you’re not doing anything wrong. Frequent night waking is incredibly common, but that doesn’t mean you have to just “ride it out”. With the right approach, you can gently support your baby to sleep for longer stretches, in a way that works with your littles one personality , sleep history and your parenting approach.

Why your baby is waking every hour

There isn’t one single reason, but here are the most common causes:

1. Sleep associations

If your baby relies on feeding, rocking or being held to fall asleep, they may need that same support every time they wake between sleep cycles.

2. Overtiredness

An overtired baby often wakes more frequently, not less.

Short naps or long wake windows can lead to a cycle of broken sleep overnight.

3. Under-tiredness

On the flip side, if your baby isn’t tired enough at bedtime, they may struggle to stay asleep.

4. Developmental changes

Sleep regressions, new skills (like rolling or crawling), and growth spurts can all disrupt sleep.

5. Inconsistent routine

A lack of predictable structure can make it harder for your baby to settle and stay asleep.

How to gently improve your baby’s sleep

The key is not to “fix” everything overnight, but to make small, consistent changes.

✔ Look at your daytime routine

  • Are wake windows age-appropriate?

  • Are naps too short or too long?

  • Getting the day right often improves the night.

✔ Build a calm, predictable bedtime routine

This signals to your baby that sleep is coming.

Keep it simple:

  • Bath

  • Massage (age appropriate)

  • Pyjamas + Nappy

  • feed

  • story or cuddle

✔ Gradually reduce sleep associations

You don’t need to remove them suddenly.

Instead, gently reduce how much your baby relies on them — step by step.

✔ Respond consistently

Consistency is what helps your baby learn and feel secure.

Choose an approach that feels right for you and stick with it.

✔ Get support if you feel stuck

If you’ve tried everything and nothing is working, it’s often about having the right plan — not trying harder.

What about “cry-it-out”?

Many parents worry that improving sleep means leaving their baby to cry.

It doesn’t.

There are gentle, responsive approaches that support better sleep while still meeting your baby’s needs.

When to get help?

If your baby is:

  • waking every 1–2 hours

  • struggling to settle at bedtime

  • only sleeping on you

…it might be time for a more personalised approach.

You don’t have to stay stuck in survival mode.
