How to Get Your Baby to Nap Longer (Without Stress or Guesswork)

The most common nap challenge parents come to me with; ' My baby only naps for 20 - 30 mins at a time'. So trust you are not alone, if you are facing this now. Short naps are one of the most common frustrations for parents, and they often lead to overtiredness, difficult bedtimes, and more night waking. The good news is that short naps are usually fixable with a few small, consistent changes.

Why your baby takes short naps

1. Sleep cycles

Babies naturally wake after one sleep cycle (around 30–45 minutes).

The challenge is linking those cycles to continue sleeping.

2. Overtiredness

An overtired baby will often:

  • Fall asleep quickly

  • Wake shortly after

  • Struggle to resettle

3. Under-tiredness

If your baby isn’t tired enough, they may wake after one cycle feeling refreshed.

4. Sleep environment

Light, noise, or inconsistent sleep conditions can make it harder to stay asleep.

5. Sleep associations

If your baby relies on being rocked or held to fall asleep, they may struggle to continue sleeping without that support.

How to gently extend naps

✔ Get wake windows right for your baby

This is the foundation.

Too long or too short = short naps.

✔ Create a simple yet consistent nap routine

This doesn’t need to be complicated;

  • Nappy change

  • Sleeping bag

  • Dark room and white noise

helps signal sleep.

✔ Give your baby a chance to resettle

If they wake after 30 minutes but are calm, pause briefly before intervening.

Sometimes babies will resettle with a little space.

✔ Support the transition

If needed, you can gently help them back to sleep (patting, shushing, etc.)

✔ Focus on consistency and opportunity , not fast results

Naps won’t improve overnight, but focus on each nap as an opportunity for your baby to get longer stretches

If short naps are affecting your whole day (and night), you don’t have to just wait it out.

I can help you create a simple, gentle plan that works for your baby and your routine.
